The Ceres Valley is renowned as an ideal fruit-growing area in Africa, important for the production of a range of fruit, particularly apples and pears. With its fertile soil, it’s fitting that the valley was name after the Roman goddess of fruitfulness.
The unique Mediterranean climate between the Skurweberg mountains on the north side and the Hex River mountain range on the south is responsible for these ideal growing conditions. The valley enjoys an average of 300 days of sunshine a year which produces particularly juicy, crisp and aromatic fruit.
Throughout the year various fruits are harvested at different times due to the temperature variance between summer and winter. The highly popular cherry-picking season, for example, runs from mid-December to mid-January. Apples, pears and peaches are harvested in summer.
